Donatella Versace has turned out to be quite a role model. Now 68, the designer heads up a brand valued at more than £2 billion. When we met in her penthouse offices on the 10th floor of the Versace HQ in Milan, she seemed more relaxed than at any point in her career. Part of this new confidence has something to with her success, to be sure – and the satisfaction of confounding all those who said she’d never make it.

But it would be encouraging to think that age has also brought her wisdom and a certain degree of serenity. Not that she’s growing older conventionally. The clothes are still skin tight, the hair still peroxide and she’ll never stop dressing starlets in corsets. But she also makes impeccable tailoring for octogenarians (Jane Fonda’s a fan) and for all we know, people even older.

Fashion shows don’t always do as much as they can to promote genuine inclusivity, but when it comes to dressing celebrities, it’s a different story. No wonder more eyeballs are attuned to red carpets than the catwalks.

Enjoy!

On Lisa’s recommendation

No wonder jacket sales are up: in this inbetween weather they’re ideal. Jigsaw’s 70 per cent wool Langord jacket is the perfect weight and cut. Loose enough to wear over a light knit when it’s chilly, but sleek enough when a T-shirt suffices – £220 of classic, value for money.
