Let's Take a Moment to Appreciate the Braids at the Oscars |
While many beauty trends dominated the Oscars this year, braids were particularly referential. Black Hollywood took to the Academy Awards red carpet to showcase the look, conveying how free they are from limiting beauty standards rooted in racist stereotypes. Though a commentator categorized her braids as "undone," Chase Infiniti wowed in her boho braids, proving just how regal and glamorous the style actually is. Ryan Coogler had a guitar and treble clef intertwined in his braids, nodding to his award-winning film, "Sinners"; Wunmi Mosaku showed off her 4C texture with coral reef-inspired braids; and Miles Caton wore cornrows for his Academy Awards debut. Overall, Oscars night proved just how regal and intricate braids have always been. They're historically significant, too: enslaved Black people once used them to recreate maps to freedom and they still stand today as symbols of pride and elegance.
