An Ode to My Favorite 2006 Olsen Styling Tricks
|
Popsugar is 20! We're celebrating big time with the launch of our Aughts Effect package featuring Monique Coleman, Tahj Mowry, Daniella Monet, and Sabrina Bryan, all of whom showed up on set ready to reinterpret early-2000s fashion with a modern twist. And honestly, that comes pretty naturally at a time when such playful trends are on the rise all over again.
I thought back to my personal style icons of '06 and immediately considered the "Olsen effect." In 2006, Mary-Kate and Ashley officially launched their luxury brand The Row and were mainstays at Fashion Week, cementing their It-girl status in the industry and proving the virality of celebrity street style moments.
There were certain tricks they employed over and over: the famous hair tuck, oversize hobo bags, relaxed beanies with polished evening wear, scarves layered over everything, and long, bohemian dresses, just to name a few. These trends were cool enough to copy then and still feel iconic now. All you really need to pull it off are a few key essentials.

Influenced: Hilary Duff's Early 2000s Nostalgia

Even if you haven't attended The Lucky Me Tour, clips of Hilary Duff performing in her nostalgic showgirl outfits have probably popped up on your FYP. The majority of her looks — including the glow-in-the-dark star dress people are recreating on TikTok — were created by Kelsey Randall, a Brooklyn-based fashion designer who has also made custom pieces for Taylor Swift, Lizzo, Chloe x Halle, Lorde, and more. I paid Randall a visit and we chatted all about early-aughts nostalgia and the playful-meets-personal chainmail dresses worn by Duff onstage.
