It's been almost a week since the announcement that Ami Colé will close permanently in September 2025. Let's be clear — this isn't just your average beauty brand shutting down. Ami Colé is the brainchild of Senegalese founder and CEO Diarrha N'Diaye-Mbaye, and its closure represents an indictment of the beauty industry at large. For many beauty lovers like myself, Ami Colé is and will always be a place where Black women were not just remembered, but cherished. We (a category that has historically been overlooked) weren't a part of campaigns just to fulfill a quota or give in to public calls; we were included because one of us is behind the brand and actually cares. Of all the brands to diversify their shade ranges, none has catered to Black women the way Ami Colé does, from its clean beauty ethos to hero products like its lip oil and skin-enhancing tint. It has put people like me at the center of the narrative as part of a genuine commitment to uplifting Black beauty.
Yet, after four years in the game, N'Diaye-Mbaye announced the brand's plan to close in an article for our sister brand, The Cut, revealing that it's shuttering in part due to a lack of support from investors. "Instead of focusing on the healthy, sustainable future of the company and meeting the needs of our loyal fan base," she wrote, "I rode a temperamental wave of appraising investors — some of whom seemed to have an attitude toward equity and 'betting big on inclusivity' that changed its tune a lot, to my ears, from what it sounded like in 2020." Another case showing that supporting Black-owned brands was just a trend. Still, Ami Colé's impact will be long-lasting and immeasurable, not only because of its masterful inclusivity, but also its purpose. Inspired by her parents' hair salon, Diarrha birthed something indescribable for Black women. The brand extends far beyond loving the shine of my lips when I apply its lip oil. It's a space where we come first — regardless of the society that constantly places us second — and there will never be another like it. Ahead, read love letters to Ami Colé from a few Popsugar editors and some of our friends in the beauty industry. And keep scrolling to shop a curated edit and bring home these thoughtful pieces while you still can. |
