Plus: I tried the new £500 hair extensions
| | Talc debacle. That’s the beauty company Avon’s current crisis, after a series of lawsuits alleged that the talc in its beauty products contained asbestos. The organisation maintains the claim is false – but, unable to pay the £1 billion of court claims, this week it has declared bankruptcy.
How, then, did the company go from selling four lipsticks a second to not having “sufficient liquidity”? Industry specialists say that the brand, despite its forward-thinking origins, “has always felt old-fashioned”, and that “social media efforts have been sluggish.”
As our writer Charlotte Lytton explains, it’s not just Avon struggling, but a range of older labels unable to keep pace with a digital-first market. You can read her piece about Avon’s history and downfall here.
In other beauty news, would you pay £500 for realistic, luscious hair? The catch: it’s not your own. Frankie Graddon has tried expert Louise Bailey's new clip-on extensions – and earnt plenty of compliments as a result.
Have a lovely afternoon,
