Plus: The classic fabric for when denim isn't smart enough and what Venice’s empty canals reveal about the city’s future
| | | By Lisa Armstrong , HEAD OF FASHION | | Hard to credit that 20 years after size zero became a serious issue on the catwalks of the big four fashion capitals, it’s back again. So Laura Craik’s article is a must-read.
Some in the fashion industry try to dismiss this as a whipped-up media storm. It’s not. Models have always been thin – arguably that’s part of their job, just as it is for ballet dancers with traditional companies, or jockeys. But there’s a world of difference between someone who looks healthily thin and someone who looks ill. What’s so disturbing is that with their lighting and make-up, some brands seem to be going out of their way to highlight this extreme body type. Given the inexorable rise of body dysmorphia across the developed world, this seems, to say the least, the height of irresponsibility.
On a lighter note, if you’re looking for something to tide you over until the weather warms up properly, look no further than corduroy. It does everything denim does, but with some youthful 70s glamour and cosiness.
