Plus: The Princess of Wales’s chic skirt suit and the Mediterranean ingredient that may reduce dementia risk
| | | By Lisa Armstrong HEAD OF FASHION | | More proof that separates are back in favour - trousers were the top search on the M&S website last week. Not just any trousers, but wide legged ones. Sales of its £35 pale blue wide-leg jeans are already up 110 per cent on last year. The retailer expects demand to carry on through into autumn as well. Meanwhile separates were all over Versace’s catwalk show in LA last week, in front of a slew of celebrities. And yes, Donatella cuts a mean pair of flares.
As someone who’s been trying them out for a while, I’d suggest the key to success - unless you’re a bean pole - is finding a good quality, drape-y fabric. Anything stiff can end up looking like two loo rolls.
Another good trick is to opt for a high waist. It’s the most flattering fit as it draws the eye to the narrowest point of your torso and also elongates the legs. You also need to think about tops. The French tuck - half in half out - is still very much a thing. If that feels too contrived, just remember to keep everything as neat and narrow as possible to balance everything out.
Meanwhile, if you’re still looking for mother’s day inspiration - don’t miss our round up of pressies so good you may want them for yourself.
