As a glass-half-full person, I’m always optimistic when trialling the latest It-Cream or de-frizzing hair product to find out if the claims on the jar live up to expectations. But after twenty odd years of testing a fair share of lotions and potions in my bathroom, the one product which I’m sceptical about is eye creams which promise to reduce dark circles. As any honest dermatologist will tell you - dark circles, particularly if they are genetic, cannot be erased by any magic potion or cream.

Eye creams with retinol, for example, may help soften crows’ feet and ingredients like caffeine, green tea or niacinamide can definitely help reduce puffy morning eyes but brightening dark lines is more tricky. As we age, the skin under the eye becomes thinner which can make dark circles more prominent - and while there are some cosmetic procedures that may help if you’re really bothered by them (imperative of course to find a good doctor for this delicate area), your best bet to lessen dark shadows under the eye is a good night’s sleep and make-up.

Jan Masters in her column talks to the queen of under-eye camouflage, Terry de Gunzburg (the famous make-up artist who created YSL’s famous Touche Eclat, which I think most of us have tried at some point). Gunzburg is now better known for her own beauty line By Terry, which have some of the best under eye concealers out there. Gunzburg talks through some brilliant tricks to apply concealer (apparently it’s best not to apply it directly under the eye! Who knew?) and exactly how to choose the perfect shade.

Well, I for one am glad that’s sorted just before the clocks go forward this weekend. I’ll be treating myself to a new shade and will definitely be practising my newly learnt concealer skills this Sunday morning!

Enjoy!
Lucia
