By Lisa Armstrong,
HEAD OF FASHION

When I had to imagine what I’d wear on a date for The Telegraph Magazine, there seemed to be so many sartorial pitfalls, especially on a first date, I wondered how anyone gets out of the door.

But it also brought home the virtues of pared down, simple dressing – which is timely, because after seasons of romantic, flouncy dresses and oversized layers, the fashion set are all wearing blazers, cotton shirts, pared back coats, trenches and tanks, keeping to a tight colour palette. And playing with proportions too – a up-turned cuff here, a longer trouser length there. In this as in so many matters, God is in the details.

The same could be said for dress codes which can be helpful or laughably outdated. Unfortunately, the Jockey Club, which runs 15 race events around the UK including The Cheltenham Festival, has decided to do away with its dress codes altogether. If your letters and emails to the editor are anything to go by, big mistake.

Huge.

On Lisa's recommendation

After months of dark nails, I’ve taken the plunge and gone for a look called Lipgloss Nails. That’s the effect by the way, not a specific colour, although generally speaking Lipgloss Nails are sheer, with just a hint of nude, and ultra shiny. It’s huge on TikTok, but don’t let that put you off. I didn’t and it’s gorgeous – natural looking, only better.
