HEAD OF FASHION

Cate Blanchett in hopsack-coloured Maxmara at the Critics’ Choice Awards this week, Naomi Watts in head-to-toe cream in The Watcher on Netflix, any Nancy Meyer movie…these are the Vanilla Women and we’d like some of what they’re having.

Which is odd, because vanilla attached to most things, as Tamara Abrahams observes in her feature, is not a compliment. Vanilla personality, vanilla sex, it’s all bland, bland, bland. But apply it to a colour palette and it’s pretty appealing, especially in the depths of January when adopting the brace position generally means crawling into dark colours.

Not here though. If pale seems too impractical, discover how a punchy bright can sharpen your look in our guide to the new, chic cardigan which can totally replace your blazer during those months when tailoring doesn’t feel cosy or streamlined enough to wear under coats.

Johnnie Boden couldn’t be accused of a vanilla personality and in our interview he’s searingly honest about the retail landscape. He says everything keeps him awake at night – at the moment it’s the length of the winter sales and the depth of the reductions: “It’s the same with all our peers. We’ve all got too much stock. Customers have become accustomed to discounts…”. But he’s also upbeat and tremendously good company.

Enjoy!
Lisa

On Lisa's recommendation

Excellent as Elizabeth Arden’s eight-hour cream undoubtedly is for parts of the body we’d never thought of before Prince Harry’s insider tip, if your face is feeling dry, we highly recommend Embryolisse’s scent-free Lait-Crème Sensitive – the ultra-rich French-pharmacy favourite that’s not just a moisturiser but a primer too (£23.40, feelunique.com).
