Before I set off to Amsterdam a couple weeks ago, I had specific images of the Dutch city in my mind — the stereotypical smoky "coffee houses" and a bustling red-light district. But I wanted to do 72 hours in Amsterdam more like a local, biking around the city and exploring lesser-known neighborhoods. I'm glad to report that I got to experience just that: picturesque canals, cozy wine bars, cool independent shops. I'm also glad to report that I ended up packing lightly — and, if I do say so myself, smartly. I focused on versatile items that could transition from the sunny, 70-ish days to cooler nights, like a pair of comfy, trendy New Balance 9060s I could wear all day biking around as well as to restaurants. If you want my take on what to do to make the most of a short trip to the famously free-wheeling city — plus shop the items I found essential during my time there — read on. — Lena Felton, Senior Content Director |
