Plus: The King’s urban designer talks pastiche and paint
| | | By Lisa Armstrong Head of Fashion | | With the big return of skirts this winter, come – wait for it – kilts. Perhaps it’s not so surprising. Dior’s Scotland show in June reverberated even for those who don’t normally notice what’s happening on the catwalks, and pleated skirts were a big feature. If you’re dubious about how flattering a kilt can be, you’re right to be. But the high street has done its work and there are now plenty of variations at all prices. Find the right one – maxi, slouchy, flat fronted with pleats that fall from the hips, not the waist – and it’s a versatile, elegant piece that makes a change from trousers.
More Dior: the spring/summer 2025 show from yesterday in Paris. This time the pleats were chiffon and the vibe was, believe it or not, athletic, even Amazonian.
The real power however, resided in the front row. So many celebrities they could have chartered a whole plane. Natalie Portman, Elizabeth Debicki, Rosamund Pike, Jennifer Garner, Isabelle Adjani, Anya Taylor-Joy, plus Brigitte Macron and Queen Sonja of Norway…. is that too many? Do they distract from the clothes? To be continued…
