Plus: The 16-day diet that will help you lose half a stone
| | | By Lisa Armstrong Head of Fashion | | I don’t want to overstate this – but M&S’s new autumn collection has all the hallmarks of being very good indeed. Of course it often looks better in the press showroom than in store, because they’ve selected the best pieces for journalists to look at.
But if all the items I saw this week make it into shops, or online – and M&S promise they will, so hold them to it – there’s more than enough to kit out a stylish wardrobe, whether you’re looking for one or two refresher pieces (a pair of burgundy patent kitten heel boots, a cream teddy bomber jacket, a fluffy cashmere cardigan from the Jaeger collection, now owned and designed by an in-house M&S team) or a whole new winter wardrobe. They’ve also made it easier to shop head to toe outfits – call it the Me+Em effect.
There are even some front row-worthy bags. Ok, that’s an exaggeration. There are times when you need a status bag, and the frow is one of them. But for every day, M&S’s non-leather burgundy shoulder bag and supple black crinkle tote are hard to beat. Sure, there are lots of synthetic fabrics. The upside is a lot of them don’t crease, wash like a dream and feel infinitely better than they did a few years ago. And the prices are as you expect.
