| | “Weird”, “selfish” and “narcissistic” are three words that are often (unfairly) used to describe only children. In 1892, the American child psychologist Granville Stanley Hall wrote: “Being an only child is a disease in itself.”
Since Hall’s days a wealth of scientific research has disproven these beliefs, and writer Tom Payne is one of many only children who do not subscribe to the stereotypes. Payne grew up on a farm six miles from anywhere and although there were few other children around, he writes that his childhood was not a lonely one, with hippies and lodgers often passing through his busy family home.
