Plus: How to style a maxi skirt like Sienna Miller
| | | By Lisa Armstrong Head of Fashion | | For years, Max Mara has been famous for its flawless, unadorned camel coats, nicely judged tailoring and latterly, for being one of Shiv’s favourite labels on Succession.
However, showing its resort collection in Venice’s not remotely minimalist Doge’s Palace, the brand’s Creative Director, Yorkshire-born Ian Griffiths, took on some of the city’s famous taste for razzmatazz. “People think of us as a minimalist brand, but we’re more about clean lines. There’s always room for a bit of embellishment… you know as a designer, too much minimalism can become deadly dull. In the end, all you can do is shorten or lengthen a hem by two or three centimetres. Creativity dies”.
And this, ladies (and perhaps some gentlemen) is why fashion shows can be useful in the real world. From a talented, clever designer we’re reminded that even when you know your style, you need to keep tweaking it or it stagnates. For some ideas on how to up the ante on minimalism, read my review here.
Elsewhere, I take a closer look at the comeback of the maxi skirt, an item popularised by Sienna Miller in 2000s and one which is enjoying a timely renaissance this summer.
Enjoy,
