Ellen and Rob Beukema’s daughter, Esther, had expressed for years that she wanted to die. She struggled with school, faced an unrelenting battle with anorexia, applied for euthanasia aged 24 and was denied. Her father believed that her depression could be treated with therapy. But as her mother puts it, “Sometimes people don’t get better.”
By the time Esther’s application was approved, aged 33, her parents were “at peace” with her decision.
In the United Kingdom, euthanasia has long been a subject of intense debate. The possibility of its legislation does not even include assisted dying for mental illness, which has been a reality in the Netherlands for 20 years. For this weekend’s magazine, Abigail Buchanan travelled there to meet the Beukemas. They explain why they are campaigning for a better understanding of assisted dying – and how by telling Esther’s story, they are keeping her memory alive.
