Plus: explore the 10 best secret Mediterranean islands
| | | By Bethan Holt FASHION DIRECTOR | | | You might assume that a fashion editor never has a wardrobe crisis or suffers angst about whether a trend might be for her, or not. Well, reader, allow me to demystifiy that assumption with the tale of waistcoats and me. I clocked months ago that they were going to be a major trend this summer. I loved how they looked on the likes of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller but on the average woman? I wasn't so sure. I now own three after a lot of trying on and realising how flattering they can actually be.
My colleague Lisa Armstrong's column about the joys of the waistcoat has further convinced me that this isn't a look we shouldn't be afraid of, even if we aren't entirely confident about our waist/ bust/ arms.
But what to wear the waistcoat with? A pair of tailored shorts or wide-legged trousers is an obvious route but a truly modern solution could be the floaty skirt.
This is one of those fashion classics which is enjoying something of a renaissance right now. Ideally you need a cinched and sleek top half, like a waistcoat, to balance out the volume on the bottom with such skirts.
The beauty of this hard/soft combination? It's the ultimate summer power duo, as great for work as for a wedding or barbecue. Perhaps one to try this heatwave weekend.
