HEAD OF FASHION

Normally here on the fashion desk, we’re big fans of colour…and yet looking at the TV Baftas red carpet last Sunday, many of the best looks were black. My personal favourites – you’re bound to have your own – were Harriet Walter in a flowy, boat necked gown, Sharon Horgan in fit and flare semi sheer guipure lace and Golda Rosheuvel in a silver and black corseted Game of Thrones number by Carolina Herrera. They were all so different, so dramatic – the money sloshing around television thanks to the streamers has definitely filtered down to the red carpet – and if they’d been in another colour they might have looked OTT.

This doesn’t mean we all need to embrace head to toe black. Danni Minogue’s sunshine yellow pleated chiffon dress by Australian designer Jason Grech was gorgeous. So was Cush Jumbo’s contoured bustier top pale primrose Erdem dress. Both were relatively simple. There’s definitely a lesson here. Not so much less is more. Checks and balances however, are everything.

Enjoy!
Lisa

On Lisa’s recommendation

If you’re looking for a waistcoat (they keep selling out at M&S) but aren’t ready to take the plunge (literally), this round-necked one by small British label Kate Barton is a perfect glide into effortless tailoring. Great over shirts and jumpers but just as good on its own (£129, The Workwear Waistcoat – Kate Barton).
