By Lisa Armstrong
HEAD OF FASHION

In the thirteen years since their engagement, Kate and Wills have quietly revolutionised the way senior royals dress, honing a modern royal style strategy that makes them and their three photogenic children both charmingly traditional and highly relatable.

High/low dressing? Kate’s queen of it. Rewears – she’s good at that too. Traditionally attired, colour co-ordinated children? You might find that a bit stagey, but they are on a stage, and the colour blocking means those set piece balcony scenes and photographs look very slick. Memo to all of us should we find ourselves planning a wedding or big anniversary?

In their different ways, the other royals have been taking notes from the Waleses for years. The ripple effects – of a sleek-looking firm that can scrub up well but also seem approachable and (relatively) normal – can’t be overstated at this transitional time, when the British royals need, once again, to rebrand themselves for a new era.

Enjoy!

Eight ways to get your wardrobe ready for spring

Ready, steady, spring! These just-landed buys will give your style new season edge

On Lisa's recommendation

After years of adhering to pale pink (the late Queen’s preferred choice), the Princess of Wales struck out at Easter with red nails. If you’ve been there, done that all winter, Deighton Lenny’s new Nail Illuminator gives nails a spring make-over. In the bottle it might look white, but it’s nothing like the thick Tipp-Ex effects beloved of Gen Z. Instead it leaves nails looking clean and fresh – perfect if they have been discoloured or ridged by months of gels (£14, leightondenny.com)
