Wild swimming has surged in popularity over recent years, with more and more of us heading to a nearby river or lake for a refreshing dip (usually followed by a warm cup of tea in a Dryrobe). It's no wonder – countless studies have exalted the many health benefits of cold water swimming, with the hobby credited with everything from improving our immune system and memory to boosting heart health and circulation.

So it may come as a surprise to hear that wild swimming comes with health risks too, with swimmers falling victim to illnesses such as gastroenteritis due to poor water quality. “No one is going to be able to guarantee a safe swimming experience in inland waters as long as we have poor-quality sewers,” says Prof Harvey Woods, founder of the Clean Rivers Trust. Scroll down to find out how to stay safe when swimming outdoors.

Plus, Ginnie Chadwyck-Healey shares her style tips for wearing a miniskirt in midlife and our travel team reveal why Gwyneth and her A-list chums have ruined ski holidays.
