Forget local staples of Kendal Mint Cake and the monstrous Cumberland sausage; Cumbria has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any region of the UK outside London.

In recent years there has been a clash of knives with neighbouring Yorkshire for this top-table position – at one point, it was seven each – but last year the Lake District inched ahead (eight) and with 10 stars in total (thanks to Simon Rogan’s three-starred L’Enclume in once-sleepy Cartmel).

Find out how this rural area took Britain's culinary crown with an innovative approach to cuisine.

Elsewhere, we take a look inside the workshop of Struthers Watchmakers before considering some of the everyday sounds that people find unbearable.

Enjoy!
